Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. (Colossians 1:15-16)

Relate: “I have a dragon in my garage.” Thus begins a fictional conversation in Carl Sagan’s Demon Haunted World. The second person responds to this statement, “Oh really? Let us go see this dragon.” They two people go to the garage and there is no dragon to see. The conversation continues:
“I neglected to mention, my dragon is invisible.”
“That is no problem, I see sand sand on the shelf over there, we can spread it on the ground and see its footprints.”
“Well, my dragon flies. In fact, it never truly touches the ground.”
“Then we can throw some of the sand in the air and get an outline of your invisible dragon.”
“But my dragon in incorporeal. The sand would pass right through him.”
“Well, I have some infrared glasses back at my house. Let me get them and we can see the fire brewing in your invisible, incorporeal dragon.”
“My dragon is heatless.”
“Then we can get some sound equipment and listen to your dragon’s heartbeat.”
“My dragon is heatless and heartless. In fact he never makes a sound.”

Sagan in this illustration is actually making the point how most people tend to move the goalposts whenever a firmly cherished belief comes under fire but most unthinking militant atheist robots simply use it as a critique on the existence of God without realizing that they tend to do the same thing whenever an intelligent theist begins to truly challenge their long cherished but untenable atheism.

React: While this illustration about moving goalposts is still valid, its immediate application as a critique against God is invalid for the Christian. That is because for us the invisible God has been made visible. That is what Jesus is. He was heard. He was seen. He even challenged one doubter to reach out and touch. God knew that man, on His own would never be able to come to know God so God instead came to live among men. As one of Jesus best friends who lived and listened to and walked and talked with Jesus for years wrote:

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone…  The Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

Dear God,
There was no way I could ever climb the mountain on my own. There is no way I could ever make myself good enough, or holy enough, or self disciplined enough, or wise enough to be able to know You through my own efforts. But that does not make knowing You impossible. You brought the mountain down. You came to me. In all of my sin, and failure, and weakness You still loved, and came, and lived with, and died for me. There is no way I could ever express how grateful I am. There is no way I could ever pay You back for this beautiful gift. So instead I give You little I can. Jesus, I give to You my everything.
