October 3 – Citizens

Read: Jeremiah 1:1-2:30, Philippians 4:1-23, Psalm 75:1-10, Proverbs 24:17-20

For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows that they are really enemies of the cross of Christ… But we are citizens of heaven, where our Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. Philippians 3:18,20

Relate: Peter Tolstoy traveled daily from Russia to the Ottoman Empire and back. As the diplomat, the ambassador, for Peter the Great to the Sultan, he was considered to be the second most powerful man in two kingdoms. His home was officially a part of Russia but it was actually located within the Ottoman Empire.

This unfortunate man had the unhappy task of trying to maintain peace with the Turks even though most of the Sultan’s advisors, and many of the princes and the powers of Europe were doing everything in their power to stir up war. Because correspondence to Moscow and back was a trip measured by weeks even in the best of conditions (which almost never existed), Tolstoy was given authority to speak on his king’s behalf. He was the voice, and carried the authority of the king while living in a pagan world.

React:  We are citizens of heaven who live on earth. Our home is a part of the Kingdom of God even as we live among people who, by their thoughts, words, and actions declare themselves God’s enemies. Like Tolstoy, our mission is to bring peace in a hostile environment. We are also the Ambassadors for Christ. When we speak is said with the authority of the God who has commissioned us. What we do is done as representatives of and with the power of the heavens backing us. How often do we actually recognize the awesome and grave responsibility God has given us under the Great Commission? How well are we living up to the trust He has placed in us?

Respond: God, I am humbled by Your power. The fact that you would chose to use it through me is an idea that I cannot seem to wrap my mind around. On the one hand, I understand it to be true, but on the other, I simply cannot believe it. Who am I that You would chose to use me? Please help me to live up to the responsibility of being a citizen of heaven as I make my dwelling here on earth.
