I am going to try one more time to do a special “25 Songs of Christmas” set of devotionals. This will be the third year I am attempting this and the last two I didn’t quite make it all 25 days. So this year I am starting a little early and also asking for help. What are your favorite Christmas songs? What do you love about the season? In the past I have used both fun and very serious songs as well as flippant (snow, hot chocolate), spiritual (Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, etc), and serious (Aleppo bombing) topics so the sky’s the limit. Help me pick the songs. Help me chose the topics. Then from December 1st until the 25th, lets celebrate Christmas together here on the River Walk all 25 days.
Update:
Thanks everyone for all the input. Songs, videos, and topics have all been selected. (You’ve given me 23 of the 25 songs I am using.) The writing is well on its way and my goal is to have everything written by November 26th. If I hit that goal, then I will not only have them posted daily here through the Christmas season but also have them available for download by December 1’st on Amazon. So without further ado, in the order they will be used, here is the list you helped me to create:
- Let It Snow
- Silent Night
- Grandma got ran over by a reindeer
- The Christmas Song
- I’m Gonna Lasso Santa Claus
- Frosty
- Feliz Navidad
- Fairytale of New York
- Little Drummer Boy
- All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth
- Precious Lamb of God
- Silver Bells
- Some Children See Him
- O Little Town
- Angels We Have Heard On High
- All Is Well
- O Come Emmanuel
- Oh Holy Night
- Mary Did You Know
- Joseph’s Lullaby
- Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent
- What Child Is This
- Sweet Little Jesus Boy
- Silent Night
- Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
Of Course, there must be an honorable mention. This video almost made but despite its artistry, depth, and excellence the fact it is so short I could not include it.

One of my favorite Christmas songs is Silent Night.
Sorry. Not ready to skip thanksgiving for Christmas yet
I understand. Normally I don’t get into it until much later but I would like to have these all written by December 1.
Coolio. I’m just sad to see the increase of christmas stuff before we’ve even had a chance to honor our thankfulness. Love Christmas, don’t get me wrong.
I love: O Holy Night, Silent Night, and Mary Did You Know!
I love Grandma got run over by a reindeer personally. But I also agree with Kia – don’t skip over Thanksgiving!
Lol. That isn’t one I have used before. It would be interesting to see what I can weave into it.
The Pogues & Kirsty McColl Fairytale Of New York
The Little Drummer Boy. BTW just read one of your past Christmas blogs, truly remarkable! “It all began with a Baby and a Breeze” – love it!
I had to look up which one you were talking about. #8 last year?
Yes, #8 “Do you hear what I hear”
I’m a song person. That’s how I connect with God the easiest. I can see from your blogs that songs speak to you too 🙂 God bless you!
How about some original Christmas songs? I have a couple of suggestions. “Christmas Is a Dream We Have” https://www.soundclick.com/html5/v3/player.cfm?type=single&songid=13282391&q=hi to hear it. One more to consider is “Through the Eye of a Camel” which is an interesting inspiring narrative of an original poem set to music. To hear it, go here: https://www.soundclick.com/html5/v3/player.cfm?type=single&songid=12771417&q=hi
I have looked at some of your past Christmas songs and it looks like you are choosing videos done by amazingly talented, professional groups. I can put together a video to put up on my YouTube Channel (Vic Zarley) but I’m not sure what I’m suggesting is going to fly for you. Anyway, thought I’d check in with you.
There are times I have created my own videos for them, like Happy Christmas when I wrote on Aleppo last year. If I am thinking of using one of yours I will ask if that would be OK.
Aleppo is a city in Syria. Did you write on that last year? I’d like to see your “Happy Christmas” video. Anyway you have my permission to use any of those songs. No problem. Attribution would be nice if you do.
Here is the YouTube link for the video: https://youtu.be/xWcjGjT7KJM
And here is the link for that Christmas post: https://theriverwalk.org/2016/12/16/25-songs-of-christmas-16-happy-xmas/
Thank you for the clarification. I pray that Aleppo is recovering in Jesus name. I look forward to hearing from you should you want to use any of this material.
I will check them out.
I love O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, but it might be more Advent than Christmas so that leaves me with Hark the Herald Angels 🙂
As for Thanksgiving – to paraphrase Dickens, we can keep Christmas in our heart all year round 😉
Angels We Have Heard on High, The Precious Lamb of God, O Come O Come Emmanuel…Blessings to you!
Joy to the World and Mary Did You Know. One of my favorite things is celebrating the true meaning with my family, even if when we are all together, you might not see all the true meaning but most certainly the joy!
There are many good Christmas songs with Scriptural meanings as well as deep theological ones. I love many of those kinds of songs, yet “The Christmas Shoes” by NewSong is one of my favorite Christmas songs, because this song touched me emotionally in a personal way.
My best friend and dear sister in Christ passed away ten years ago. Before she passed away, she asked me to buy shoes for her to wear at her funeral. She was so sick that she could not go shopping. I bought a pair of white shoes for her because she wanted to wear her wedding dress at her funeral.
When I heard this song on the radio on my first Christmas without her, I could not stop crying. Yes, this song makes me cry each time I listen to it, but I know that she is in a beautiful place now, worshipping her Father face-to-face with all the other believers, and I will join her someday.
This song also reminds me that we need to open our eyes and look around to see if we can share Christ’s love, even in small ways.
My favorite songs Mary did you Know and Little Drummer Boy. But we don’t start Christmas celebrations here until after Thanksgiving.
Those are two of my favorites as well. Normally I don’t get into Christmas until much later but I am wanting to have these all written by December 1
Good King Wenceslas
Let All Mortal Flesh Stay Silent
(Not sure if it’s my favorite, but it’s the first which comes to mind. )
Hi BJ, My favourite is O Holy Night by Josh Groban link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zh-yR0pbmU
What Child is This?
Fairy Tale of New York, definitely 😀
Hi there, Last year I really enjoyed your 25 days of Christmas; I wrote a ‘Short Thought’ for my ministry which I attached for you with thanks for the inspiration. I’ve been thinking about my favourite Christmas songs and what I enjoy, so here are a few ideas to consider: Immanuel, O Immanuel:Do they know it’s Christmas? Band Aid;O Holy Night (yes, I know …. but I love singing it)In the bleak mid-WinterMary, did you know?Anything from graham Kendrick’s ‘Rumours of Angels’ That’s it, can;t wait to see what you do with all the responses you get 😉
Feliz Navidad! Simple yet catchy. I love the tune and how you can clap and snap to the rhythm.
We Three Kings and Merry Christmas Baby by Otis Redding.
I wish you success in your endeavour.
My favourites are
– Joy to the world
– O holy night
– Angels from the realms of glory.
May you be anointed to sing for Him.
“We Three Kings” is one of my old favorites.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow
How ’bout “Some Children See Him”, by James Taylor? It’s a nice globally inclusive “Christ child” one. Your list has many of my faves–I love the holiday season, have to think about making fruit cakes now 🙂 God bless you much.
My favorite is.. I am dreaming of a white Christmas. And my all time favorite is silver bells ….ooo and frosty
Great idea. Don’t know how you could use them but I’ve always been partial to The Christmas Song and White Christmas (this year especially since this is the first time I could actually experience one where I live).
Looking forward to it!
You were looking for a song about Bethlehem – O Little Town of Bethlehem might work?
I’m also amazed no-one mentioned O Christmas Tree (Tannenbaum) – There’s a huge variation in lyrics.
The Coventry Carol mentions Herod – Pentatonix did a cool version.
There’re several songs about Joseph out there, I did a quick google search. I love MercyMe so Joseph’s Lullaby was my favourite.
and finally for the Innkeeper – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVVgbmFSqUE made me cry and I think you’ll like it considering the topic you’ve been on recently.
Lovely list!
Sorry I’m late. Good luck with the project. Favorite Christmas song: What Child Is This. Book: A Christmas Carol
