January 3 – And Then He Died

and-then-he-died

…and then he died… and then he died… and then he died… and then he died… and then he died…
and then he died… and then he died… and then he died… (Genesis 5:5-31)

Read: Genesis 5:1-7:24, Matthew 3:7-4:11, Psalm 3:1-8, Proverbs 1:10-19

Listen:

Relate: This is a conversation once overheard a long, long time ago:

“Eat the apple.”
“No.”
“But it’s good for you.”
“No, it’s not. It will kill me.”
“Lie.”
“True.”
“Look, I ate it and I’m not dead. Eat it. Really, your eyes will open and you’ll be just like God.”

Eve ate the apple. Then Adam ate the apple. And then they died. Then Cain killed Able. Then Seth died. Then his son died. And then his grandson died, and the son after that. And we all die. Because we all sin. And that’s just the way it has to be.

Unless it doesn’t…

React: There is only one person alive who did not sin.Still, he died. Because He died without first having sinned, death couldn’t hold him in the grave. Now He lives. Actually, He shouldn’t have even died in the first place. He only died at first because He was dying for someone else’s sin. Your sin. My sin. Am I willing to give up ownership of my sin and accept the truth that He has paid the penalty for me? Are you? If so, He can make me, make us, sinless. Then, death won’t be able to hold us in the grave either. One day…

We will live again.

Respond:

Dear God,
I thank You for the cross. I thank You that You have taken on Yourself the penalty for my sin. I surrender it all to You. I know that because of You, like You, even though I die… I will live again.
