Be Sensible

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.
(Proverbs 10:19)

Relate: Have you ever had a fight with your mother or father that left you thinking, oh I wish I didn’t say anything, cause I sure have. I remember when I was younger, my mom and I were fighting over the fact that she wouldn’t let me hang out with my friends outside of school. In the heat of the moment, I told her that I wished she wasn’t my mother, and that I wished my friend’s mother was my mother instead. It may have happened 8 years ago, but to this day I still regret uttering those words. Our words and what we have to say have an impact on the people around us, especially the people those words are directed at. If we don’t have anything kind to say, it is better for us to just shut our mouths rather than hurting others, or even ourselves with the guilt that we will carry.

React: As humans, sin is inevitable. There are times that the gossip is just too good to resist. But as Christians, we are fortunate enough to live a life with a God who never ceases to forgive us. But we should not be complacent and rely on forgiveness when God is already warning us in Proverbs 10:19, Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.

Respond:

Dear God,
We thank you for the gift of Your word and the reminder that too much talk can indeed lead to sinful behaviour. We thank You that You are a God of second chances and a God who will always choose to forgive us, that You always choose to be gracious towards us, and to forgive us for the sins we have committed. As we go on with our day, our week, and our lives, help us to remember that our mouths are a blessing from You, which we should use only to glorify You and not to harm others. We thank You for the life You have given us, may we use it to honor You. In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.
