Few Things Worth Doing Come Easy

Few things

This was their report to Moses: “We entered the land you sent us to explore, and it is indeed a bountiful country—a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is the kind of fruit it produces. But the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak! (Numbers 13:27-28)

Read: Numbers 11:24-13:33, Mark 14:22-52, Psalm 52:1-9, Proverbs 11:1-3

Relate: The view is beautiful but the climb is tough. There are forty-six mountaintops in New York’s Adirondacks that together are classified as the high peaks. Those who set about climbing some, or all, of those heights are said to be “peak bagging”. I haven’t gotten anywhere near all of them and probably never will but I have “bagged” a few of those peaks. The thing is, none of them can said to be easy and sometimes the attempt for some of them can be downright fatal. The view is beautiful but the climb is tough.

Few things worth doing come easy. Have you ever run a marathon? Have you ever scaled a cliff? What about bungee jumping or skydiving? Do you remember the first time as a kid you jumped from the highdive? My mind is running to the adrenaline junkie activities, but it fits for other things as well. Did you ever pursue a romantic relationship with someone everyone thought was out of your league? Have you ever applied for a job beyond your experience and qualifications? What were your thoughts about raising a child the first time you held your newborn in your arms? Few things worth doing come easy.

hardReact: But it’s haaaaard. Scott Pilgrim was right and it all too often is so much easier to sit on the couch watching TV. Slaying giants is scary. Taking on the impossible is daunting. Maybe tomorrow I will enter the land. Today… those fortified cities just look a little too strong.

Dear God,
Forgive me for my skewed perspective. The task set before me, the land promised to me is beautiful and fruitful and good. But it’s hard. There are giants in the land. Help me to take my eyes off those giants and on to You. If You go before me, there is nothing to fear. If You have called me I know I cannot fail. Help me to see You for who You really are so that I might recognize those “giants” for the grasshoppers they really are.

  1. Thank you for sharing your journey of faith. With God, all things are possible …your post reminds us of how easy it is to lose that perspective. And the importance of us lifting one another in prayer, encouragement and faith.

  2. Thank God for this post. Sometimes I get so overwhelmed and forget who God is and it feels so good to be reminded, especially when I am in a moment that I am almost forgetting again. God bless you.

  3. When I read this earlier, for the first time I stopped seeing myself as Caleb or Joshua and realised just how much more like the other 10 I actually was. It’s nice to imagine we’d respond like the 2 lone voices but a reality check reveals otherwise. However, that’s not the way we are intended to be. Thanks for the reminder! In Him the giants really are grasshoppers – or even tiny ants!

  5. Exactly what I needed to read, and a song that I needed to listen to. Exactly the right point in my day, when I am feeling overwhelmed and hard pressed. Thank you
