We may throw the dice, but the Lord determines how they fall. (Proverbs 16:33)
Relate: There is an episode of Star Trek where Captain Kirk and Spock are investigating a planet when they are captured by Klingons who have a base there. The two begin to plan an impossible escape and Spock, Vulcan that he is, lets Kirk know right up front that their odds are something like seven million to one at successfully escaping. They confront one obstacle after another and every time they have a moment to catch their breath, Spock has recalculated the odds and shares his observations. While still ridiculously impossible, each time these odds are more and more in their favor. Finally, near the end Spock says that their odds of escape are two hundred to one. Kirk turns and says, “Why Spock, I’m beginning to like these odds.” What neither of the two realized until the very end was that there was another more powerful species that had monitoring the entire escape and intervening on their behalf so that there would be no outbreak of violence.
I remember a time when I was facing seemingly impossible odds when someone intervened on my behalf. We were playing a version of traditional Risk using a Castle Risk board (as shown above). I controlled the west and my cousin had the east. We had learned from experience that whichever of us managed to punch through the beefed up borders would win the game. It looked like he was going to do just that. From Vienna, Will was attacking Switzerland and I was down to my last defender.
Then the impossible happened. For the next sixteen rolls my one die managed to beat out his three. It was years ago but I’m pretty sure I even once rolled a two while he got three ones. I wish Spock was there to calculate the ever improving odds as one after another his men were taken off the board. With his attacked stalled, I then cleaned up on my next turn but we were both still in shock. For years afterward any time in any similar game someone was nearing death, the battle cry would go up, “Remember Switzerland!” It never did work like that first time. It shouldn’t even have happened then.
React: Sometimes in life we might feel like we are facing impossible odds. In those times, lets not forget that there is another, outside force, manipulating the outcome. Has God given us an impossible dream? Go for it! Are there skeptics telling you it will never happen? Do it anyways. Are we “under attack” and it seems like we have reached the end of the line? Then it is time to yell out, “Remember Switzerland!” and double down.
If God is for me, who can ever be against me? The odds of God accomplishing His will through an obedient servant is always one to one no matter what the odds makers might say. Always. It is a sure bet. It is an easy win. The seemingly impossible odds are only there to prove our faith and demonstrate His faithfulness.
God, You are greater than any odds. Your Word is truer than the voice of the skeptics. Give me the vision to dream big for You. Give me the courage to step out and do it. When the enemy seems to be lining up against me and I feel they might break through, help me to remember that if You are for me, who could ever stop me? Victory is already mine, so help me to step out and roll those dice.
