Angels (4/20/13)

Read: Joshua 21:1-22:20, Luke 20:1-26, Psalm 89:1-13, Proverbs 13:15-16

For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord? What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord? The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne. (Psalm 89:6-7)

Relate: Time for a little experiment. Open up a new browser and do a google image search for “angels” I can guarantee 99% of the images it returns will either be cute lil guys like the picture above or hot vixens in skimpy clothes with wings. Now do a bible search for angels. Ezekiel has got angels with eyes everywhere, Isaiah has angels with six wings. The first thing angels usually say is, “Don’t be afraid” but that’s because the usual human response is to be “sore afraid”. Clearly there is a disconnect between reality and our view of angels.

That disconnect also goes to what angels do. There is an abundance of Hollywood movies from Gabriel to The Adjustment Bureau as well as shows like Touched By an Angel that influence all kinds of wrong thinking about angels. This isn’t the forum to get into discussing and correcting each of these. Needless to say, we don’t each have an angel sitting over our shoulder protecting us and keeping us from doing stupid things. If we did, my guardian angel must be incredibly good at the former but hopelessly bad at the latter. If you want to study more about what the Bible has to say about angels, this article is a great place to start.

React: To be honest, I don’t really think much about angels. I know for certain that our obsession with them is idolatry. There is one angel who loves the fact that his kind gets all the attention rather than us focusing on God. Satan and his ilk roam around as angels of light and all kinds of people think they are doing good by following that light even as they wander away from God. We need to keep a proper perspective in order to be pulled away into angelolatry. They serve us (Hebrews 1:14), they long to look into the salvation we have received (1 Peter 1:12), and ultimately they are nothing compared to the greatness of our God. Let’s keep our eyes on Him. Oh yah, they are also a terrible baseball team out in LA.

God, You are so much greater than any other. It is so easy to get caught up in the peripherals, but anytime I get caught up in lesser things, help me to turn my eyes on You. Even as You use me as an angel, a messenger, of Your love to others, don’t let me get distracted into focusing on the angels You have sent to minister to me. All I care about is You.

  1. God is doing a great work with this brother. angels like the pictures of Jesus are not what the world needs to focus on we need to focus on spreading the gospel!!!

  2. Psalm 34:7 the angel of The Lord encamps sound those who fear him. Angels are the messengers of God , he really used them to speak to people during Old Testament times. I believe this was necessary for communication between God and his people prior to the crucifixion of Jesus. Because people did not have the Holy Spirit with them to guide them until after his resurrection. We are both Creations made my God for his glory and to carry out his works in heaven and earth, working together for the same God. Worshiping the same God.

  3. I am grateful personally, not to have seen the glory of God or his angels. Too much respect for the sacred and holy. and there is good reason they always say, “fear not, ” the power of God is far beyond what our heads can wrap around!

  4. Thanks for this article. We were in a shop in Old Sacramento. The beautiful pastel colors of a gown caught my eye on a box in the “Angel” section. In gold letters was the name on this “game” – ‘Angel Speak.’ Beneath it said, “Talk to your angel.” To my horror, I realized that it was an Ouija Board. The current fascination with angels is not only laced with bad theology, it can be dangerous – as seen here.

  5. Love the article… I have long been meditating on the the fact that angels long to look into the redemptive process for humans mentioned in 1 Peter. These pure unfallen beings do not know personally what is like to need redemption… Also, I find interesting that Jesus mentioned the fact that little children have angels in heaven who constantly see the Father’s face…

  6. Nice post. I learn something more challenging on different blogs everyday. It will always be stimulating to read content from other writers and practice a little something from their store. Id prefer to use some with the content on my blog whether you dont mind. Natually Ill give you a link on your web blog. Thanks for sharing.
