Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living can save you from death.
Proverbs 11:4
Relate:
I think that we live in a world where it is generally viewed that money can solve all our problems. The rich can just pay their way out of trouble or get whatever they want. One example of this that happened to me was when I was playing a rugby match against ISM. ISM is a school that is definitely for rich people and it isn’t a Christian environment. When we were at ISM I got to see all their fancy equipment, all the high-quality rugby balls that they had, and felt like they just had a better life and a better chance of winning. I mean how was I, someone whose cleats were falling apart with no practice with equipment supposed to compete against a team that had everything? Well, long story short we lost. However, afterward, I remember going over everyone’s faces and realizing that none of the people on the opposing team were Christians. In the end, all their high-quality equipment did not save them, but I was saved despite not having much. This proverb truly reminded me of the blessing that I had despite my supposed poverty.
React:
Knowing that we realize at the end of times being rich or having material wealth will not save us, how are we to respond? I suppose it depends on who you are from that point. If you are a Christian and you know that your place in Heaven is secure then the next thing to do is bring other people into “right living.” The death mentioned in the verse is after all eternal death. Why should we hoard a reward that we did not even deserve?
But what if we are not certain of our faith? What if someone you were talking to doesn’t believe in Christ and you bring up this verse? I think this would be a great opportunity to self-reflect. Do riches and material wealth make you happy? Are you satisfied with your life? Please consider that the verse didn’t call the life to salvation the “easy life” it simply calls it the “right life.”
Respond:
Father God,
I thank You that You have forgiven me of my sins and forgotten who I once was. Please help me to remember and always acknowledge that I live for You and not for the riches of the world. Help me to continue the righteous life and not fall for temptation, in Your Name,
Amen.
