People can never predict when hard times might come. Like fish in a net or birds in a trap, people are caught by sudden tragedy. (Ecclesiastes 9:12)
Relate: There was a show my mom used to watch when I was a kid. I think it was called Early Edition. The premise, if I remember correctly, was that there was this cat who brought a newspaper every day that had tomorrow’s news. The guy who got this newspaper would then take that paper with him over the course of the day to try and prevent the tragedies that were going to happen. As he went about changing fate, the miraculous newspaper would change as well.
More recently there was another show, Tru Calling. Tru was a medical student who worked in a morgue and every now and then one of the dead bodies would open their eyes and say, “help me”. She would then “rewind” to the moment she first woke up that day and had to relive it in hopes of preventing that unfortunate victim’s death.
React: Wouldn’t that be nice? Wouldn’t it be great if we could know in advance when trouble was coming? There are more than a few days I wouldn’t mind being able to “rewind” and do over again. I’m not talking a Groundhog Day thing where I have to keep reliving one day over and over again until I get it perfect, I’m thinking more of simply stepping out of the way of the disasters of my life.
I would love to go back and fix the last conversation I had with my dad. I would love the opportunity to check in on my sister before the hypoglycemic shock took her life and her absence took the life of her newborn daughter. There are words I would take back, others I would say, dates I would fix, choices I would change. Unfortunately, rewinds are impossible. All we can do is the best with the time we have going forward.
Forgive me for the poor choices and the dumb decisions I have made in the past. Help me to not compound my mistake by wallowing in them. Help me to not add to them. Help me to be wise and disciplined in living to my very best in the time I do have. I know storms will come. I know tragedies will strike. Help me to weather every storm and endure every tragedy sheltering in You. Be with me through every trial.
