August 14 – Great, Awesome, and Powerful

You alone are the Lord. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you. (Nehemiah 9:6)

Read: Nehemiah 7:73-9:21, 1 Corinthians 9:1-18, Psalm 33:12-22, Proverbs 21:11-12

Relate: Apollo 10 during it’s re-entry phase managed to reach a speed of 24,790 mph. Do you have any idea exactly how fast that is> Well, for one thing it is the fastest man has ever traveled. That speed is about 236 times faster than I have ever traveled in a car. It is also a little less than a sixth the speed of the fastest unmanned vehicle. If we were able to maintain the fastest speed those astronauts were able to travel all the way to the sun, it would still take us about 5 months to fly into the sun. Of course, the ship would disintegrate long before we arrived, even if we were able to acquire and maintain that speed, our engineering capabilities aren’t nearly good enough to let us even get close.

Alpha Centauri  is the nearest solar system. traveling as fast as man has ever been, it would take more than 117,800 years to visit that closest neighbor. To travel to the brightest star in the night sky would take almost double that. The size, distance, and dimensions of the entire cosmos are simply mind boggling and even for those things that are closest to us, the numbers are so large that my mind cannot truly appreciate the magnitude of what I am talking about. Yet I serve a God who has called each star by name. He stretches them out like a curtain and not only created them but continually holds them together.

React: I serve a big, big God…

Beyond that one statement, it is difficult to know even what to say. God is great. He is awesome. I simply do not have the words to describe how great, and how awesome, and how powerful He truly is.

Respond:

Dear God,
You are so worthy of all of my praise. You are a great and a good God, the only one deserving of my worship and adoration. Help me to focus more and more on You that the petty trials I might face might fade. You are so much greater.
Amen
