Always An Answer (8/13/13)

Read: Nehemiah 5:14-7:73, 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, Psalm 33:1-11, Proverbs 21:8-10

Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much.
(1 Corinthians 8:2)

shut up

Relate: A few years back I took an IQ test. Apparently I did well and was really proud of my score. When going through the results I found out that I have the same IQ and way of processing my thoughts as Bill Gates. Of course this puffed me up quite a bit and I had to start telling everybody I knew. I was working hard at this task when a wise friend quite rudely burst my bubble. He said, “Well, that just goes to show how stupid you are.” I was flabbergasted. I wanted to reply but I was so backed onto my heels that nothing was coming. He went on, “So you’re saying you have the same raw intelligence as Bill Gates. Great. Look at what he did with his and then look at you. Are you really proud of that?” Touche’.

Hate might be too strong of a word so I’ll try not to use it. I am really, really not a fan of people who think they are smarter than me. The audacity… don’t they realize how wrong they are? I am really, really not a fan of those purveyors of random facts. I don’t appreciate it when they spout off numbers, dates or percentages I was just about to spout off myself. What gives them the right? I am really, really not a fan of people who have an answer for everything. I hate it when they try to take my job from me like that.

React: More and more I am coming to believe that humility and teach-ability are the true earmarks, if not of intelligence, at least of wisdom. Then again, what do I know? I very well could be wrong.

God, keep me humble. Help me to realize how much of what I think I know, I don’t really know. Keep me teachable. Take away that irresistible urge to always have an answer or the last word. You are the answer. Help me to keep from always trotting out my own and keeping people from being able to see and learn of You.

  1. I just know that bible has that scripture “Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much. (1 Corinthians 8:2)” oh how i need to read bible like A LOT.. 🙂 anyway i believe one thing..HOLY spirit is our teacher..HE knows everything..So when we are sensitive to HIS voice, we can become wiser, better, and smarter than before because we have best of the best Teacher..

  2. I think we have to do work of keeping humble and being teachable. God isn’t just going to zap you humble or teachable. James 4:12 says to humble yourself.

  3. I really like what you said…”humility and teach-ability are the true earmarks, if not of intelligence, at least of wisdom.” Very well said!!! Humility allows us to be flexible and pliable in the Potter’s hands. amen

  4. It’s definitely difficult to not say anything, but we’re not meant to boast, only share our light. God knows what lies inside and that is all that counts. Our gifts/talents are meant to be shared but not in a competitive or belittling manner. They are meant for propulsion and inward musing.

  5. I am not sure if I hear this somewhere or I figured it out on my own, but I look at education, knowledge, etc in this manner: The more I learn, the more I realize, the less I I know.

Education and reading for me had opened the gates to the things I don’t know. And then I “look around” at just how much I don’t know. There is a vast world of information to learn.

  6. I can so relate to your story. I was tested with a very high IQ. I tell folks that my IQ and a dollar will get me a glass of water anywhere I choose to go! Knowledge got me into a lot of trouble. Now I try hard to walk by Proverbs 3:5,6: I will trust IN THE LORD with all of my heart and not lean on MY OWN understanding. In ALL my ways I will acknowledge Him and HE will direct my paths.

I get into less trouble that way!

  7. Matthew 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
“He chastises those He loves” We still do not know it all. Stay humble, all knowledge will be revealed when we leave this prison planet to be with the KING!

  8. I am still shocked at your “wise friend’s” response! I only know you from your blog, but I follow it and learn from it daily. Helping a legion of people work their way through the vastness of the Bible is no small matter!!! Your IQ is being put to good use.
