And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. (John 17:3)
Relate: This image was on the cover of my May issue of National Geographic. The cover article was talking about new research in longevity and how research into individuals within a certain cultural group in Central America have a specific gene that causes them to live a healthy active life well into their 90’s and beyond. Time magazine had an article, “How To Live to 100 Years”. Scientific American wrote: “The New Path To Longevity”. USA Today asks: “What Role Does Genetics Play in Lifespan” after doing a brief article on Elsie Thompson who almost lived to 114.
Clearly there is an interest to living a longer, healthier life. Health Care in America is a multi-billion dollar industry. You can buy anti aging cream from Nordstrom for $450, Anti aging supplements, Rejuvalife, from Health Research Labs for $40, and Dr Oz can give you an anti aging diet cheat sheet. So can I. Stop ordering pizza and Chinese take out, put the ice cream back in the freezer and eat some fruits and veggies instead. Everybody is desperate to spend any amount of money (and research) on how to live longer, but for all that at most the best we can do is add a few decades to your life.
React: Jesus has a better plan. He has a program that will not just add a few years before your clock is punched. He has a plan that will do more than just give you a little more spring in your step during your twilight years. His plan will have your life stretching on through eternity. All you’ve got to do is follow Him. Problem is, He said that anybody who wants to follow Him must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow. In other words, if we want to extend our life… If we want to really, really live longer… All we have to do is die before we are dead.
God, I thank You that You laid down Your life for me. It is sin that leads to death and You, who knew no sin, could have lived forever. There was nothing in You that would bring death. There was nothing until You took on Yourself my sin. Help me to truly understand what it is to know You and what You have done for me. Help me to die to myself that I might live for You… forever.
