Everything Is Sacred

Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted. (Titus 1:15)

Read: Jeremiah 49:23 – 50:46, Titus 1:1-16, Psalm 97:1 – 98:9, Proverbs 26:13-16

Relate: We live in a compartmentalized world. Who I am at work is different than who I am at home, which is different from who I am at my church/synagogue/mosque, which is different from who I am in the community. The way I speak and act and even think at the bowling alley is different from how I think/speak/act at a restaurant which is different from how I am at a football match. (Not American football. I would never waste my time and money going to one of those.)

The sad thing is, we have been taught to believe that this compartmentalization is a good thing. It is part of the Protestant ethic to separate life into public and secular spheres. It has been so ingrained in our culture that most Americans mistakenly believe that “separation of church and state” is actually part of the constitution. Even though it isn’t, so many judges have delivered verdicts based on this fallacy that it has become part of our legal code.

React: No matter how much society tries to compartmentalize our lives, we must try to fight this trend. For the Christian, everything is sacred. Secular does not exist. When a teacher steps into her public school, what she does is sacred. When the journalist types words for that press deadline, what he does is sacred. When a politician sits down to discuss or vote on a new bill, what they do is sacred. For those who have been justified by God, everything we say and do should be honoring to Him. Keeping religion out of the workplace is an impossibility. It goes with us. It is who we are. To those made pure, everything is pure. Everything is holy. Everything is sacred. Compartmentalization is sin.

God, help me to live with the understanding that everything I do is sacred. Every moment of every section of every day that I live, is a moment I have to bring You glory. When I am at work, help me to be diligent for Your glory. When I am with family, help me to be loving for Your glory. When I am at church, help me to be transparent for Your glory. When in my community, help me to be neighborly for Your glory. No matter where I am, no matter what I am doing, let me be pure. For everything I do is a beautiful offering to You.

  1. Pilate told Jesus: “Don’t you know that I have the power to free you or crucify you?” Jesus replied: “You would have no power over me unless it was given you from above.”
God loved us all into being. We are because He is.
First thought and honor should be given to Him in all that we do. Any alteration because of circumstance is hypocrisy and as you most accurately professed, a sin.

  2. For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s (Romans 14:7-8).
