Relate: He was not planning to be a lone voice against an incredibly popular issue. As a Christian conservative, his vote was the only one that would have been cast against the resolution. When it became so blatantly obvious that, like lemmings off a cliff, virtually everybody else was all for going to war in Vietnam, Eugene Siler chose not to seek reelection. He went from being known as an upstanding Christian and a man promoting good old fashioned family values to a traitor simply because he stuck to his convictions.
Jeremiah found himself in a similar spot. Everyone in leadership was a hawk. Everyone else advising the king to resist the enemy. Jeremiah was one of the only voices of truth. God had placed the Babylonians in authority. Israel as a nation was under judgment and the best any individual could do was submit to them and refuse to fight with King Zedekiah and the army. Jeremiah’s words were from God and they were truth… they were also treason. These words landed him in prison and were the death of one of his contemporaries (Zechariah).
React: I pray to God that I will never have to be put into a position that godly obedience will mean treason, imprisonment, or martyrdom. I pray even more that if such time comes I will have the courage to speak truth boldly. As it is, there are times when proclaiming truth will put us in opposition to popular culture. There are times when godly obedience can and must equate to civil disobedience. It might mean taking a stand where everyone else takes a seat. It might mean taking a knee where everyone else stands. If a commitment to truth means treason to the State… let me a traitor be.
You alone are worthy of all glory. You alone are worthy of my loyalty. You alone are the one I depend on. You alone. Help me to be so devoted to You that if… no, when, You call me to speak out against injustice, evil, or the godlessness of the society I live in, I will speak unquestioningly. Let there be no divided loyalty. Let my voice bring honor to You no matter what others might call it.
