The Whisper

Sin whispers to the wicked, deep within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all. (Psalm 36:1)

Read: Leviticus 4:1 – 5:19, Mark 2:13 – 3:6, Psalm 36:1-12, Proverbs 10:1-2

Relate: Another translation has this verse read: “I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked. There is no fear of God before their eyes.” This translation, the NIV, carries a footnote that offers an alternate rendering of this verse as: “A message from God: The transgressions of the wicked resides in their hearts. There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Sin whispers what we want to hear. It seeks to convince us of the lie that we want to believe. That lie might be, “I can handle this.” Or perhaps, “It’s no big deal.” Maybe it is whispering, “I was born this way.” Sometimes I wish sin was a little bit more blatant. I wish it screamed at me full bore, “Come join me on the road to hell!” That would be a temptation I could easily resist. Instead I can barely hear it beckoning, “This will just be a brief detour” and that soft enticing is oh so strong. “It’s no big deal, sleep in a little longer… There will be other chances to share your faith with them… You know that movie will be a good one… It’s all you can eat, go on back for that third plate… Everybody cuts that corner… God wouldn’t give you that desire if He didn’t want you to act on it…”

God, help me to stand strong against the pull that so easily entices me. Help me to hate, to detest the sins that seem so alluring in the moment. Help me to understand the gravity of even those things that seem like no big deal at all. Let my love for You grow so deep and so strong that the whispers of the enemy would have more no pull on my heart. Let a holy, reverent fear of You before my eyes sweep away the evil that longs to take up residence in my heart.

React: Do you hear the whisper? What is it saying to you? One of its lies is that there are big and there are small sins. Whatever your area of weakness is, it never seems to be as big a deal as X. Truth is, there’s no such thing as a small sin. Lying sends us to hell just as quickly as adultery does. Murder is murder, whether it is a preborn child or a full grown adult and both are just as evil as the gluttony I find myself succumbing to every time I am eating at the Great China Buffet Star on Old Vestal Road. It’s never the shout that gets me. It is the whisper quietly pulling me in the direction that part of me already wants to go.

God, help me to stand strong against the pull that so easily entices me. Help me to hate, to detest the sins that seem so alluring in the moment. Help me to understand the gravity of even those things that seem like no big deal at all. Let my love for You grow so deep and so strong that the whispers of the enemy would have no more pull on my heart. Let a holy, reverent fear of You before my eyes sweep away the evil that longs to take up residence in my heart.

  1. So very true. When I find myself making excuses for something I’m about to do, I know deep within myself that I am being led away by my own lusts and enticed into sin. We must cling to Jesus’ hand and keep following him closely. He will never leave or forsake us, but each time we rebell, we let go of his hand and leave him. I never want to lose sight of my Lord! Thank you for this post!
